Information: Titoceres jaspideus, a beautiful African longhorn beetle of dry savannas and semi-deserts, has been described from Senegal as Ceratites jaspidea by Audinet-Serville in 1835 . T. jaspideus is in the area of occurrence considered a serious pest of acacias (Senegalia, Vachellia) and other legume (Fabaceae) trees. Often the species is attracted to light at night.
Body length: 17 - 30 mm
Peak activity: January - December (depends on region)
Remarks: We assume occurrence also in Algeria due to the finding of the species near the borders. A common species of eastern and southern Africa that inhabits dry steppe and semi-desert acacia areas.
Distribution: Algeria?, Angola, Botswana, Chad, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Mauritania, Morocco, Mozambique, Namibia, Niger, Senegal, Somalia, South Africa, Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, Zimbabwe?
[Oman, Saudi Arabia, Yemen ?? : Probably the specimens of T. jaspideus recorded from southern Yemen (GESTRO 1889) belong to T. arabicus. (Holzschuh, 1991)]
