Strandzha National Park (National Park)

Strandzha National Park is the largest protected area in Bulgaria and is located in the southeastern part of the country, along the border with Turkey. It is known for its diverse ecosystems, rich cultural heritage, and unique flora and fauna.

Overview of Strandzha National Park:

  • Location: The park is situated in the Strandzha Mountains, which stretch across southeastern Bulgaria and northwestern Turkey, making it a transboundary region. It lies close to the Black Sea, with some parts of the park extending near the coast.
  • Area: The park covers an area of approximately 1,161 square kilometers (116,000 hectares), making it the largest protected area in Bulgaria.

Ecology and Biodiversity:

  • Flora: Strandzha National Park is home to some of the most ancient and preserved forests in Europe, with unique plant species, including relics from the Tertiary period (more than 2 million years old). Some of the notable vegetation includes oak and beech forests, as well as laurel-leaved species typical of subtropical climates.
  • Fauna: The park is a sanctuary for a wide variety of animals, including rare species such as the European wildcat, otters, and several species of bats. It is also an important habitat for birds, especially migratory species that use the Via Pontica, a major migratory bird route passing through the park.
