Information: Oryctes (Rykanoryctes) agamemnon, the widespread species was first described in 1847 by the German entomologist Hermann Burmeister from Egypt.

Remarks: Oryctes agamemnon has four described subspecies that are serious pests of date palms (Phoenix dactylifera) in many date palm growing countries. These pests seriously damage palm trees, reducing the quantity and quality of date fruits and weakening the trunks, which eventually fall and die.

Information: Oryctes agamemnon ssp. arabicus is a date palm pest found primarily in the Arabian Peninsula. In Tunisia, O. a. arabicus was accidentally introduced to the Mrah Lahouar oasis in the Djerid from the United Arab Emirates in the late 1970s.

Remarks: A common species in Oman and the Emirates that is attracted to a light trap.
