Meloe (Eurymeloe) rugosus Marsham, 1802

[= Meloe abdominalis Escherich, 1890]
[= Meloe autumnalis Leach, 1815]

ℹ  Information: Meloe rugosusdescribed by Marsham in 1802.
This species has been recorded from England, Spain, France, central and eastern Europe, and from Turkey to Central Asia. Records from Spain are limited to the northern regions and the Madrid provinces (García-París et al. 2006). It is possible that records from the Turanian region actually refer to M. glazunovi. In general, all records from the Balkans, Turkey, and the Caucasus require detailed revision using molecular techniques and new morphological characters.

Bologna (1988, 1991) summarized the available information on the biology of this species. In central and eastern Europe, it is found in plains and hilly regions, while in Greece and Turkey, it appears to be an orophilic species, occurring at elevations of 1500–2100 m a.s.l.

Body length:   6 - 18  mm
Peak activity:  September - December, March - May

⚠  Remarks: Adults appear in early spring (March-May) or autumn (September-November). This is more of an autumn species, from spring it occurs relatively rarely and only singly. It inhabits a variety of habitats from steppe grasslands, meadows, pastures and roadsides to sandpits, quarries and railway sleepers. Locally abundant species, practically throughout the entire territory in suitable habitats. This bee is found mainly in the lowlands, but also in the foothills. Like the vast majority of bees, this species is also tied to solitary bee species in which the larvae develop.
