Meloe (Eurymeloe) mediterraneus G. Müller 1925

ℹ  Information: Meloe mediterraneusdescribed by G. Müller, in  1925.
Mediterranean element with marginal extension into north-central France and as far as southern England. It is distributed, with some discontinuities, throughout the Mediterranean Basin, Anatolia, and Iran.

Distribution. The species is widely distributed throughout the Mediterranean region (including Macaronesia) and in some thermophilic areas of Western and Southeastern Europe, extending eastward to Turkey, Transcaucasia, and Iran. Some records from Libya referring to Meloe rugosus Marsham, 1802 an Euro-Turanian species absent from North Africa actually pertain to M. mediterraneus, while others likely refer to M. affinis schatzmayri Bologna, 1988.

Body length:   11 - 36  mm
Peak activity:  September - May (June)

⚠  Remarks: A thermophilic species found from sea level up to 1000 meters, with sporadic records up to 1700 m a.s.l. in Sardinia, Sicily, and Morocco (Bologna 1991). Adults are nocturnal, lucifugous, and polyphagous phytophages. Its biological development is unknown.

🌍  Distribution: Albania, Algeria, Armenia, Austria, Canary Islands Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Egypt, France, Great Britain, Greece, Hungary, Montenegro, Iran, Italy, Israel, Libya, Madeira, Morocco, Malta, Portugal, Serbia, Slovakia, Spain, Tunisia, Turkey
Zoogeographic region: Palearctic

A southern Mediterranean species, found in the Iberian Peninsula (at least in the central-southern area), Sardinia, Sicily, Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya. The data related to the Canary Islands and Madeira should be referred to flavicomus; most of the Iberian and Maghreb specimens to nanus; all those from peninsular Italy and probably also those from Anatolia to ganglbaueri; those from southern France perhaps partly to bauduery and ganglbaueri; the data from the southeastern Mediterranean basin (Libya, Egypt, Syria, Palestine, Iraq, and Iran) are probably to be referred, at least in part, to nanus and kandaharicus
