Information: Meloe brevicollis was described by Panzer in 1793.
Asian-European element with extension into the Maghreb. Polymorphic species: the nominal subspecies is widespread throughout Europe and the Mediterranean islands, reaching as far north as England and central-southern Scandinavia, and extending eastward from Russia and northern Turkey across Central Asia to the Himalayas, China, Korea, and Kamchatka.
The subspecies algericus Escherich, 1890 is found in Sicily, northern Tunisia, and northeastern Algeria; curticornis Escalera, 1914 occurs in Morocco; mistaniensis Aksentiev, 1985 is found in Azerbaijan and Iran.

Remarks: This species tends to be cold-loving (cryophilous), and it is mostly found in mountainous habitats between 900 and 2500 meters above sea level. Adults are diurnal, polyphagous phytophages, feeding mainly on plants from the Ranunculaceae, Asteraceae, and Poaceae families. The activity period in Europe spans from May to August.
