Information: Goliathus goliatus, is the largest Cetoniinae species, described by Linnaeus in 1771 from Gabon originally as Scarabaeus goliatus.
Body length: 40 - 110 mm
Peak activity: November - February, October - December
Remarks: In Uganda Goliathus goliatus is found feeding on Prunus africana and Cordia millenii, in Cameroon also on Vernonia conferta, Vernonia amygdalina, Carapa grandifolia, and Nobotania mannii.
[Vernonia conferta is a species commonly found in tropical regions of West and Central Africa. It grows in countries such as Nigeria, Cameroon, Ghana, and other nearby regions. This plant species typically thrives in humid, lowland forests and along forest edges, often in open or partially shaded areas where it can receive ample sunlight.]
Distribution: Angola, Benin, Nigeria, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad (south), Gabon, Equatorial Guinea (?), Republic of the Congo, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Rwanda, South Sudan (?), Uganda, Kenya, Zambia, Tanzania (?)
Zoogeographic region: Afrotropical
Taxonomic classification:
The Cetoniinae of Africa | Beinhundner 2017
Information: G. goliatus s. str. inhabits ecoregions in western to eastern central Africa that encompass both low- and high-altitude tropical rainforests.
Body length: 40 - 110 mm
Peak activity: October - December
Distribution: Benin, Nigeria, Cameroon, Central African Republic, Chad (south), Gabon, Equatorial Guinea (?), Republic of the Congo, Democratic Republic of the Congo (north and central), Rwanda, South Sudan (?), Uganda, Kenya (west)
Material examined (& observation):
[= Goliathus orientalis auct. (nec Moser, 1909)]
[= Goliathus orientalis orientalis meleagris Sjöstedt, 1927]
[= Goliathus meleagris Sjöstedt, 1927]
Information: G. g. meleagris seems restricted to subtropical woodlands in southern central Africa. In D.R.C., the boundary (contact zone?) between the two subspecies may lie in the Southern Congolian Forest-Savanna Mosaic ecoregion, which separates the sparsely wooded plateaus of southern D.R.C. from the tropical forests of north and northeast D.R.C.
Body length: 40 - 100 mm

Distribution: Angola (northeast), Democratic Republic of the Congo (south), Zambia
